Principles of Exhibit Design

Based on available research, the authors identify underlying principles of visitor behavior as it relates to exhibit design. Although the article is from 1987, the principles are still relevant to contemporary design challenges. The length of viewing time and the level of engagement are two of the key measures used to make recommendations about the content and style of effective exhibits. The authors also draw attention to other important dimensions of the exhibit that influence the visitor experience such as the presence (or absence) of nearby objects and exhibits; social interactions within groups; and placement and content of interpretive aids such as labels.
